This film is a fascinating account of the history of Oman's unique water management system called ‘falaj’ and of the importance the Omanis attach to its upkeep. Built in pre-historic times by Persian immigrants from across the Gulf, the ‘falaj’ is a marvel of civil engineering, creating oasis in the desert. Sophisticated irrigation systems allow Omani farmers to grow fields of alfalfa, onions and even barley in the mountain valleys, as well as roses, limes and date palms.
