Dates: June 21 - July 1, 2022
Last Date to Apply:
Course Duration: 16 hours (self-paced - 8 hours and virtual sessions - 8 hours)
Learning Platforms: Moodle and Zoom
Course Type: Online
Background
Groundwater caters to about 50% of the water demand in cities. It is an integral part of the hydrological cycle and has a significant role in the economy. Groundwater is also a key in contributing to surface water bodies and maintaining e-flows in streams and rivers.
With rapid urbanization and expansion of city boundaries, increasing population, and industrialization, urban groundwater regimes are severely under pressure. The various natural and human-induced activities have resulted in water table depletion and contamination of the groundwater. Urban groundwater management involves interventions and approaches for making cities water-sensitive and improving river health/flows.
This online training is a part of a series of activities envisaged under a 3-year duration CSE programme – ‘Capacity building initiative focusing on ‘Making Ganga basin cities water sensitive’. Under this initiative series of – webinars, workshops trainings (both online and residential), field exposure visits, knowledge conclaves aimed at engaging 1,300+ number state / municipal functionaries and other sector players. The programme is supported by National Mission for Clean Ganga and is part of the series of ongoing efforts by NMCG aimed at ensuring convergence of Namami Gange Mission with national flagship urban missions (AMRUT, Smart Cities, Swachh Bharat Mission, HRIDAY, NULM), and other missions (Atal Bhujal Yojana, Jal Jeewan Mission, Jal Shakti Mission) at state /city level across Ganga basin states.
About the training
The training will focus on Urban Groundwater Management with special reference to the issues, challenges, approaches, and potential. The training will help in mainstream water-sensitive urban design and planning (WSUDP) for urban groundwater management.
Aim
To build the knowledge about concepts and potential of Urban Groundwater including a water-sensitive approach and its potential in urban groundwater management.
Training Highlights
- Concept, status, and significance of urban groundwater in cities.
- Overview of existing issues and challenges of urban groundwater management in India and in particular Ganga basin cities.
- WSUDP approach and its potential in urban groundwater management.
- Best Management Practices (BMPs) and case studies of successfully implemented projects.
- Understanding the enabling frameworks (policy, plan, programmes) and regulations in urban groundwater management.
