When India gained its freedom the government was convinced that big power projects and industries held the key to rapid growth. We find a dam at the foot of the Himalayas some say has caused more problems than it’s worth and a village in Uttar Pradeshwith high levels of fluoride causing a debilitating bone disease in the residents. The River Ganga is very polluted, chemical effluents from the tanneries, human sewage and decomposing bodies make it a high health risk. We see how a turtle and crocodile hatchery might just be the answer. The elephants in West Bengal are becoming a nightmare for the locals, trampling crops and their villages. The government has set up a project, which hopes to protect both their interests.
