The UN Environment Programme has identified 150 ‘dead zones’ in the world’s oceans, where marine life cannot exist due to lack of oxygen. The problem begins on land - fertilizers and sewage are washed into rivers and then out to sea. Excessive quantities of these nutrients cause an explosive growth of algae which, when they decompose, use up the available oxygen and suffocate other marine life. In part one Earth Report visits South Korea, India, Kenya and Vietnam to find out how environmental mismanagement on land is becoming a grave threat to our seas.
